Business Valuation Conference 2020 - Online


Featuring a keynote address from Prof. Aswath Damodaran, this online conference will keep you abreast of new standards, technologies and techniques that are transforming the efficiency and accuracy of business valuations.

The Business Valuation Conference is a highly anticipated biennial event that will be hosted online over four days - 19, 20, 26 & 27 October 2020 for the first time.


As the only Chartered Accountants ANZ event dedicated to Business Valuation, it's an important opportunity to build on technical knowledge and critical-thinking skills that support client relationships.


The online program comprises seven live-streamed sessions (including four webinars and three workshops), delivered over a two-week period.

Ideally suited to accountants in Business Valuation and Financial Reporting roles, the engaging and interactive sessions are designed for professionals with an intermediate or advanced level of skill and experience.


Content description

This conference has been created in collaboration with the Business Valuation Committee. It opens with a keynote address from 'the dean of valuation' Prof. Aswath Damodaran, and features a host of Australian and international experts who will explore topics such as:

  • Advanced techniques that incorporate risks and possibilities
  • The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on valuers
  • Making your valuations more robust
  • Digital technologies and a data driven future

Professor Aswath Damodaran
Aswath Damodaran holds the Kerschner Family Chair in Finance Education and is Professor of Finance at New York University Stern School of Business. Before coming to Stern, he also lectured in Finance at the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Damodaran's contributions to the field of Finance have been recognised many times over. He has been the recipient of Giblin, Glucksman, and Heyman Fellowships, a David Margolis Teaching Excellence Fellowship, and the Richard L. Rosenthal Award for Innovation in Investment Management and Corporate Finance. His skill and enthusiasm in the classroom garnered him the Schools of Business Excellence in Teaching Award in 1988, and the Distinguished Teaching award from NYU in 1990. His student accolades are no less impressive: he has been voted "Professor of the Year" by the graduating M.B.A. class five times during his career at NYU.

Manda Trautwein CA
With a holistic approach to business advisory, Manda is able to work with her clients to assess their business as a whole, then work with a big picture philosophy to successfully help them implement the work required. Manda enjoys working with clients who have strong growth aspirations. Apart from day-to-day assistance with tax and accounting compliance obligations, she also enjoys being a sounding board to her clients on strategic business planning matters. Able to draw on her extensive experience in business valuations, mergers and acquisitions and ASX listings if required, her practical approach is focused on maximising business outcomes and supporting her clients to achieve their commercial goals.

Simon Dalgarno FCA
Simon has worked in the financial valuation industry for over fifteen years. He has completed numerous valuations for private and public companies including: businesses – from power stations and heavy engineering to rubbish dumps and consulting practices intellectual property – brands, plant breeding rights, databases and computer systems. Simon advises on valuations under the accounting standards, including: option valuations (AASB 2), purchase price allocations (AASB 3), impairment testing (AASB 136). Simon also advises on the sale and purchase of businesses, undertakes evaluations to assist in capital expenditure and investment decisions for both public and private sector clients. He regularly conducts seminars on valuation theory and practice for legal and accounting professionals and is a major contributor to the leading valuation text, Australian Valuation Handbook.

Professor Jon Whittle
Jon Whittle is Director of CSIRO's Data61, the digital and data science arm of Australia's national science agency. With around 1000 staff and affiliates, Data61 is one of the largest collections of R&D expertise in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science in the world. Data61 partners with over 200 industry and government organisations, over 30 Universities, and works across vertical sectors in manufacturing, health, agriculture, and the environment. Prior to joining Data61, Jon was Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University, the largest university in Australia. He was named CEO Magazine's 2019 Education Executive of the Year. Jon is also a former Technical Area Lead at NASA, where he worked on software for NASA space missions. Jon is passionate about the role digital technologies can play in society. He has a world-leading reputation on how to adapt software development methods to fully take into account human values and ethics, so that we build software for a society we want rather than one we get by accident.

Siobhan Hall CA
Siobhan is a Director at PwC in the Valuations team based in Sydney. She has ten years of specialist valuations experience across the Asia Pacific and Europe having spent three years with the PwC UK Valuations team focussing on financial services and derivatives and the remainder of her career based in Australia. She has extensive experience in valuations across a wide variety of asset types for financial reporting, internal decision making and transactions. Her specialist areas include debt and complex financial instrument valuation.

Jay Shaw CA
Jay is a partner at Grant Thornton New Zealand and leads their business valuation and forensic accounting service line. He is a committee member of the CAANZ business valuation special interest group. Since 2017, he has sat on the Business Valuation Board of the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC), the leading independent global valuation standard setter.

Stephen Reid CA
Stephen is a partner of Financial Advisory and leads the Valuation team, specialising in providing valuation advice for mergers and acquisitions or other commercial purposes. Stephen has expertise with the provision of corporate finance advice, assessments of financial projections, pre-acquisition due diligence reviews, valuations, structuring advice and feasibility studies in respect of companies operating across a broad range of industries throughout Asia.

Professor Michael Potter CA
Michael is a director of Axiom Forensics Pty Ltd, a forensic accounting practice located in Sydney that he cofounded in 2004. He has been a chartered accountant for 30 years and has both a business valuation specialist and forensic accounting specialist designation from the CAANZ. Axiom provides a broad range of forensic accounting services including dispute related valuations (for example shareholder and joint venture disputes) economic loss assessment, litigation support (also known as expert witness work), financial investigations, fraud investigations, fraud risk management and general consulting. Michael’s clients include a number of major law firms, major telecommunications and media companies, insurers, financial institutions and regulators.
