Foundations of Tax 2023-24 - Session 24: Trust: Preparation of an ITR

This topic provides an outline of the accounting/tax compliance issues for a taxpayer that is a trust.

On successful completion of this topic, participants should be able to:

  • State and complete the basic status information on a trust tax return, including the presentation of accounting business income and explain why a trust lodges a tax return
  • Include other amounts of income on the trust return
  • Explain and calculate “income of the trust estate” and explain its importance in the taxation of trust income; including the completion of the beneficiary distribution statements

Bruce Thomas, Senior Tax and Superannuation Trainer, CA ANZ

Bruce was previously a tax manager with William Buck Chartered Accountants where he advised clients on the application of the goods and services tax, FBT and other government charges. 


He worked for the Australian Taxation Office for 17 years, including as a senior officer dealing with technical issues involving the GST. Bruce has been a trainer with CA ANZ for over 18 years.
