Session 1:
Recent Developments

Review current changes and what is proposed for 2021/2022 that affects Payroll including:
  • Federal Budget and impact on employers
  • State Budget brief
  • Preparing for the increase in the superannuation contribution rate and EOFY transition
  • STP Phase 2 – what it is and what you need to start doing now
  • Casual employment – what the Courts and Government say
  • Annualised salaries – the options that work
  • Latest industrial relations changes to be aware of.
On successful completion of this topic, participants should be able to:
  • Identify current federal and state specific payroll issues to ensure accuracy and compliance including Single Touch Payroll
  • Understand legislative changes and their impacts on payroll functions for your organisation
  • Competently perform or manage the payroll function
  • Provide practical, relevant and accurate payroll advice.
Session 2:
A complete practical guide to calculating entitlements, applying tax and disclosure in STP including:
  • Fair Work Act obligations
  • Taxation conditions for a genuine redundancy including impact of age
  • Calculating tax free redundancy amounts
  • Calculating and correctly disclosing all leave entitlements
  • Determining when ling service leave may be payable
  • Completing all necessary paperwork.
On successful completion of this topic, participants should be able to:
  • Determine minimum redundancy and/or notice and payment in lieu of notice entitlements under the Fair Work Act
  • Determine if a redundancy meets all tax criteria and process all payments including tax free amounts and leave entitlements
  • Process general termination including leave entitlements and employment termination payments including their correct classification
  • Explain correct STP disclosures
  • Answer common queries that staff and clients may ask about terminations.
Session 3:
State Obligations – Payroll Tax and Workers Compensation
  • Review of State Payroll Tax definition of taxable wages and Workers Compensation definition of remuneration.
  • Examine the rules for determining the correct State for declaring wages when staff work/reside in different States.
On successful completion of this topic, participants should be able to:
  • Calculate Payroll Tax and WorkCover obligations, including what counts as remuneration/taxable wages and when contractor arrangements may need to be included
  • Apply the rules correctly in declaring wages in the correct jurisdiction.

Session 5:
STP Disclosure review and EOY process

  • Summarise the critical areas to get right with STP coding.
  • Review finalisation through STP, adjustments post 30 June and staff common queries.
  • Explain how to deal with underpayments, overpayments and EOFY disclosure.
On successful completion of this topic, participants should be able to:
  • Complete the STP EOY process and answer staff and client questions.
Session 6:
Reportable Employer Superannuation Contributions (RESC)
  • Review the rules in determining when a contribution to superannuation must be disclosed at the RESC label.
On successful completion of this topic, participants should be able to:
  • Explain when a contribution to superannuation must be disclosed at the RESC label in STP
  • Explain how the RESC amount affects employees
  • Explain the distinction and impact between accrual of superannuation and payment of superannuation. 
Session 7:
Reportable Fringe Benefits (RFB)
  • Review the conditions applying before an amount must be disclosed at the RFB label.
  • Review the exclusions that can apply and in what circumstances.
On successful completion of this topic, participants should be able to:
  • Calculate the RFB amount for employees.

Glynn Flaherty is the Director of Payroll Matters Pty Ltd with over 28 years’ experience in advising and assisting clients in employment related areas with a particular focus on federal and state taxation and superannuation aspects. Glynn also provides specialist payroll related training throughout Australia and overseas on Australian obligations.
