Liz Westover is a Partner and the National SMSF Leader at Deloitte. She is responsible for the firm’s SMSF service offering providing compliance and advisory services to the firm’s clients. Liz has extensive experience in superannuation, having previously held positions at PwC and as Head of Superannuation at Chartered Accountants ANZ. She has strong capabilities on the technical application of superannuation and associated tax laws. She is a regular commentator on superannuation issues with mainstream and social media and has authored blogs and articles on superannuation and related issues for many years. Liz has been heavily involved in superannuation policy development and advocacy, regularly liaising and consulting with Government, regulators and stakeholders on technical, legislative and policy matters. She is a Fellow Chartered Accountant, CA SMSF specialist and holds a Master of Legal Studies from the University of New South Wales and a Bachelor of Business from the University of South Australia.
Matthew Burgess co-founded specialist firm View Legal in 2014, having been a lawyer and partner of one of Australia’s leading independent law firms for over 17 years. Matthew’s passion is helping clients successfully achieve their goals. Matthew specialises in tax, estate and succession planning, providing strategic advice to business owners and high net worth individuals. He has been recognised in the 'Best Lawyers' list since 2014 in relation to trusts and estates and either personally or as part of View in ‘Doyles’ since 2015 in relation to taxation and since 2017 in relation to wills, estates and succession planning.
Dan is one of Australia's leading SMSF lawyers and has worked predominantly in the SMSF, tax and related fields for over 30 years. He is also a Specialist SMSF Advisor, Chartered Tax Adviser, Chartered Accountant, and a holder of an MBA from the University of Melbourne, where he is also a Senior Fellow in the Melbourne Law Schools’ Masters of Laws program presenting on taxation of superannuation in postgraduate programs. As a commentator and author on these subjects, Dan is also a member of the ATO’s Super and Employment Change Network (‘SECN’) and provides input to the ATO and Treasury on SMSFs. He is also a member of the Law Institute’s Taxation Committee and the Tax Institute’s National Superannuation Committee as well as a long serving member on a number of tax committees.
Mark provides technical and compliance support on SMSFs to financial advisors, accountants and SMSF trustees. He regularly writes and presents on SMSF related technical and compliance matters.
An accredited SMSF Specialist Advisor with the Self Managed Super Fund Association, he was awarded the 2018 CEO award in February 2019 for his contribution to the association and was in the inaugural group of association members to advance to the status of Fellow in February 2020. He is also a Fellow of both CPA Australia and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA), as well as being a Registered Tax Agent. Mark has spent over 30 years in accounting practices and SMSF administration companies, including running his own accountancy practice and SMSF administration and compliance advice company for ten years.
Julie has extensive experience of over 25 years in the SMSF Industry and has been part of the SMSF journey from the start. She has deep experience in multiple facets of the accounting, wealth and SMSF sector and has been involved in many roles within these sectors. For many years she has provided strategic / technical support, education and consulting services to hundreds of accountants, advisers and lawyers around Australia. She also regularly writes for industry publications and has also had the pleasure of educating thousands of SMSF Trustees. Julie is currently Head of SMSF & Estate Planning for KPMG. Her role is to run the SMSF Centre of Excellence on a national basis. This includes many layers of strategy and ‘thought leadership’ within the industry.
Bryce recognised as one of Australia’s leading SMSF lawyers. He has worked predominantly in the fields of tax and superannuation over the past 17 years and holds a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne. Bryce is a regular seminar presenter on tax and SMSF topics and has published extensively in these areas. Bryce regularly presents for the major professional bodies including the SMSF Association, CPA Australia The Tax Institute, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and DBA Network. Bryce is regularly quoted and published in the Australian Financial Review, the Herald Sun, CCH and LexisNexis publications, and elsewhere in the financial press.
Shirley Schaefer is BDO Adelaide’s Super Leader and has been with BDO in Adelaide for over 25 years. She is a SMSF specialist, recognised for her technical and training expertise, and is often called for comment by the media. Shirley’s passion for all things SMSF is evident in her profile and presentations. Shirley is an auditor by training but a SMSF specialist by choice. Shirley has been publically recognised with Awards for her work with SMSFs in the compliance and audit space.
Tony is Superannuation Leader at Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, a position he has held since November 2015. Tony has 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry in which he has previously held a number of senior positions. Tony is the author of The Essential SMSF Guide 2018/19, now in its 8th edition. The Guide is published by Thomson Reuters and endorsed by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. For over twelve years, he wrote a weekly financial services column for The Australian newspaper. Tony is a Chartered Accountant and CA SMSF Specialist. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and Graduate Diploma in Business Systems from Monash University. He also has a Diploma in Journalism and an Advanced Diploma of Financial Services (Superannuation). He is a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (Finsia) and a specialist member of the SMSF Association.
Melanie is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia specialising in Global Retirement Income Systems. She has over ten years’ experience at Accurium in our superannuation team. Melanie has extensive knowledge in superannuation and SMSFs, and is a regular presenter at a number of industry leading SMSF conferences. She also provides training for Accurium clients and staff. Melanie specialises in complex issues such as retirement modelling, pensions and segregation strategies.
Peter Bobbin has a Master of Taxation, Bachelor of Laws and his Commerce Degree in Accounting and Finance System and leads the financial services team in Sydney. His experience covers the areas of superannuation, taxation, estate and business succession planning, commercial structuring, regulatory compliance, and general commercial issues. Peter has also been involved in developing Australia's first Master Financial Planning for University of Western Sydney and continues to act on a project basis for each of Australia's major financial institutions.
Garth has over 20 years of practical experience in superannuation and has a passion for helping other Professionals to build and develop their knowledge and service offerings to their clients.
Theory is important but being practical and pragmatic is what grows your business! Garth spends most of his time working with accountants, lawyers and financial advisers to develop strategies that help their clients get the most out of their SMSFs. He is adept in the compliance requirements for practitioners, the technical requirements of the laws and regulations, and the very real impact on clients. Often referred to as the ‘super man’, Garth is a recognised and in-demand presenter in the field. He is a regular writer and speaker on superannuation issues and strategies. Garth shares his knowledge by writing and presenting on SMSF and superannuation issues for industry groups, professional bodies, individual firms, private organisations and networks.
