Description
This package introduces practitioners to the foundational rules of Australia’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) system, with a strong focus on applying those rules in practical compliance settings. Participants will learn how to determine GST liabilities, entitlements to input tax credits (ITCs), and how to calculate the net amount payable or refundable. The sessions also equip learners with the skills to accurately complete a Business Activity Statement (BAS), ensuring compliance through correct account coding and identification of taxable versus non-taxable transactions.
Across the 2 sessions, participants will be able to:
GST: Core Rules

- Identify whether an input tax credit (ITC) is allowable for a given transaction.
- Calculate a taxpayer's GST net amount for a given tax period.
- Understand how a GST assessment can be made by the Commissioner of Taxation.
- Assess whether a GST refund is payable to the taxpayer.
Preparation of a BAS Return
- Accurately classify transactions as taxable, input taxed, GST-free, or outside the GST system.
- Understand the importance of correct account coding in the general ledger for BAS preparation.
- Identify when a document qualifies as a tax invoice and when an ITC can be claimed.
- Assess GST treatment of input taxed and GST-free transactions.
- Identify and apply adjustment events that affect BAS reporting.
