This intermediate course is designed for finance professionals working in public practice and business who desire a clearer understanding of how to identify and respond to conflict of interest threats they may face.

Professional ethics, including the management of conflicts of interest, is attracting increased interest worldwide from the public, regulators, standard setters, and the profession. Failure to demonstrate ethical behaviour, including responding appropriately to conflict of interest situations, may erode public trust in the accounting profession.


Many professional accountants believe they can identify, evaluate, and address a conflict of interest when one arises. However, many complaints received by CA ANZ, involve conflicts that are identifiable to a neutral observer. In these cases, the conflict of interest can often be attributable to a loss of perspective, rationalizing the conflict or an inability to identify a conflict of interest due to familiarity with a client or stakeholder. This tells us is that professional accountants, regardless of their level of experience, can develop a &lsquo;blind spot&rsquo; when it comes to identifying conflicts of interest.


Irrespective of where you are in your career, it&rsquo;s recommended that you take the time to check your &lsquo;blind spot&rsquo; regularly and implement procedures to minimize the risk of complaints due to an unrecognised or unmitigated conflict of interest.


This micro course is designed to further your understanding of conflict of interest situations from the Conflict of interest guide - CAANZ 2021. You will complete a reflection activity to identify your own 'blind spots', explore your obligations under the various applicable codes, standards, and legislation relevant to your role and jurisdiction. You will recap the process for identifying, evaluating, and addressing conflicts of interest and explore interactive case studies of conflict of interest situations to practice applying the process.

In a survey of CA ANZ members, respondents ranked 'adhering to a code of ethics' as the most important characteristic of a profession, ahead of expertise and education. Ethics is about doing what is morally correct &ndash; both in our work and in our personal lives. A profession earns respect when its members commit to and adhere to its ethical code.


All professional accountants have a responsibility to act in the best interest of the public and comply with the fundamental principles of integrity, objectivity, professional competence and due care, confidentiality, and professional behaviour. This is set out in the International Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (including International Independence Standards) (the Code), which applies to all International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) member bodies.


Just like accounting standards, member bodies may adopt or modify the international Code for use in their own jurisdictions. Australia and New Zealand each have their own published Codes of Ethics based on the international Code.


This micro course focuses on the international Code, and you will learn about your ethical obligations as a professional accountant and how to use the Code in practice. You will gain practical experience using the Code and applying the principles to real life scenarios.

The International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA) and the International Audit and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) recently made the most extensive changes to the Code of Ethics in over two decades. In light of these changes, this micro course is your opportunity to refresh your knowledge of the Code and how it applies to you and your role.

Ethics is defined as a system of moral principles by which human actions and proposals may be judged good or bad, or right or wrong. The effects of your ethical decisions can be significant, not only for the stakeholders involved but for yourself. Some understand ethics to include personal characteristics, such as trust, integrity, and honesty. Others emphasise consequences; that is, considering the impact of decisions on stakeholders or acting with &lsquo;social responsibility'. For others, &lsquo;doing the right thing&rsquo; means you adhere to key principles, such as treating others in the same way that you would want them to treat you.
