This paper highlights the key tax implications surrounding a divorce or separation.

  • Understand the key issues associated with the subsequent disposal of the main residence acquired under a marriage breakdown
  • Determine whether there are any Div 7A and/or CGT implications where a Court orders the transfer of numerous assets from a company to an individual
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the tax issues that may emerge where a Court orders the transfer of numerous assets from a trust to an individual
  • Explain whether there are any exemptions or tax deductions relating to spousal maintenance

Bruce Thomas Senior Tax and Superannuation Trainer Bruce has written and presented training on a wide range of topics, including the tax aspects of real estate transactions, fringe benefits tax (FBT) and salary packaging. Bruce was previously a tax manager with William Buck Chartered Accountants where he advised clients on the application of the goods and services tax, FBT and other government charges. He worked for the Australian Taxation Office for 17 years, including as a senior officer dealing with technical issues involving the GST.  

 

Chris Schoeman, Associate Director, MKT Taxation Advisors 

Chris is a Fellow member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) and Chartered Tax Advisor, he has a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting and Business Law from Curtin University. Chris joined MKT in 2013 as a Tax Manager – Private Groups where he specialises in Self-Managed Superannuation and Tax matters related to Private Groups including ATO High Wealth Reviews. Chris is also a member of various committee’s for Chartered Accountants Australian and New Zealand including the Public Practice Panel and WA Regional Council, positions he has used to advocate for Tax Agents and smaller practice on a range of issues.
