WA Building Knowledge - Lessons Learnt from Robodebt

In this session, held for CA Specialists or CAs with an interest in Forensic Accounting or Business Valuations, we welcome Jennifer Flinn, Barrister at Murray Chambers, and Hollie Ponton CA from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

This session will examine the ethical lessons learnt for individuals involved in Centrelink’s Robodebt, those who were subject to Royal Commission, and those who had personal disciplinary findings against them for breaches of their professional ethical obligations. Presenters will also discuss the proceedings and the findings from the perspective of a Chartered Accountant, and the ramifications for the accounting profession.

Jennifer Flinn LLB, LLM, Grad Dip Legal Practice

Barrister, Murray Chambers

Throughout her career, Jennifer has held senior legal roles in private practice, in-house, and with government, cultivating a diverse practice spanning workplace relations, commercial law, and administrative law.

With an extensive background in workplace relations, Jennifer has advised employers and senior executives in a wide range of employment and industrial relations matters. She has represented clients before the Fair Work Commission and Federal courts, handling disputes related to enterprise agreement interpretation, unfair dismissal, adverse action, and unlawful discrimination. Jennifer’s experience includes enforcing confidentiality and non-compete obligations in the Supreme and Federal courts. Jennifer has also represented the Fair Work Ombudsman in matters relating to the Fair Work Act 2009.


Hollie Ponton, CA, CA Forensic Accounting Specialist

Hollie is currently an officer at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) in the Enforcement and Compliance team following an extensive career in practice within Forensic Accounting and Insolvency. At ASIC, Hollie’s experience has included interrogations of accountants and assessments of accountant misconduct against relevant standards of which disciplinary action ensued.

Hollie brings a unique viewpoint from her experience being both client side and enforcement side, where ethical considerations arise in both environments.
