Foundations of Audit: Auditing Trade and Other Payables

The goal of this workshop is to simulate a real life audit engagement in auditing the trade and other payables section of a small audit. The aim is to apply professional scepticism and judgement to an audit area and successfully work as a team member of an audit engagement.
Foundations of Audit is a facilitator-led workshop designed to give new members of audit teams the opportunity to practice their time management, communication, teamwork and stakeholder management skills. Participants will work through a hands-on roleplay-based case study – where their decisions have consequences – and engage in guided reflection on how they can improve their decision-making next time. The case study contains a number of challenges that are commonly encountered when auditing the payables section of a small, not-for-profit client.

This practical and interactive workshop will provide participants with insights into how they can be better auditors, including specific personal goals to work towards when back in the office.

Participants have the chance to practice developing and exercising their professional interpersonal skills in a safe learning environment, that “feels real”. They will strengthen their teamwork, time management and client communication skills.
Upon satisfactory completion of this activity you will be able to:
  • identify the key risks within the scenario and determine who and when further inquiries should be made with relevant stakeholders;
  • determine how to appropriately and adequately document relevant findings within the audit file
  • work as a team to maximise outcomes in a pre-determined time frame
  • formulate alternative methods if the plan doesn’t work
